The Critical Role of Regular Dryer Vent Cleaning

Maintaining a free-flowing vent isn’t just an optional chore — it’s a crucial component of property maintenance. Allow us to paint you a picture.

Fire Icon

Preventing Fire Hazards

Lint and debris can accumulate in your dryer vent over time. Since lint is highly flammable, it poses a serious fire hazard. Regular cleaning reduces the risk of a dryer vent fire, which can be caused by overheating due to restricted airflow.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that poorly maintained dryer ducts are the reason for a house fire every 40 minutes.
An IntelliVent cleaning offers quick and easy peace of mind.

Air Quality Icon

Preventing Mold and Mildew Growth

Moisture from damp clothes can accumulate in a clogged dryer vent. This can create an ideal environment for mold and mildew growth. This is essential for the safety and comfort of your home. Regular cleaning helps prevent the buildup of moisture and reduces the risk of mold-related issues.

Extend Icon

Extending Dryer Vent Lifespan

How much did you spend on your dryer? A poorly maintained vent forces the whole system to work overtime and causes premature wear and tear.
Save yourself future headaches and costly replacements with regular cleaning. Dryer systems can last well over a decade when properly serviced.

Enhance Icon

Enhancing Efficiency

A clogged dryer vent reduces the efficiency of your dryer. When your vent is obstructed, it takes longer for your clothes to dry, and your dryer has to work harder, leading to increased energy consumption. Cleaning your vent helps maintain optimal airflow, improving the overall efficiency of the dryer.

Safety Icon

Compliance With Safety Regulations

We help ensure you stay on the right side of local codes and regulations. This is particularly crucial for property managers. The last thing you need is a fine for non-compliance or the liability from the loss of life or property caused by a preventable dryer fire.

Dryer Vent Cleaning

Here Are The Three Easiest Ways To Know If Your Dryer Vent Needs Cleaned

If you haven’t cleaned your dryer vent in a while there are some tell-tale signs to look for that will let you know you should definitely have it cleaned:

Drying time Icon

Longer Drying Times

Your dryer should take no more than 45 minutes to dry a normal sized load. Blocked vents hinder the movement of hot air, which can easily double or even triple your drying time.

Overheating Icon

There Is A Musty Smell Around The Dryer

At times we’ve removed blockages and then had quarts of water pour out of the vent because it previously had nowhere to go. A musty smell in your laundry room may be a symptom on a clogged vent

Excessive lint Icon

Overheating & Burning Smells

A burning smell is never a good sign. If it seems like it may be coming from your dryer or you notice that the machine or the clothes are unusually hot to the touch after a cycle, pause on laundry day and give us a ring. It’s likely lint buildup posing a fire hazard.
A unit repeatedly shutting off during the drying cycle is another warning sign. Most models have a built-in safety feature that cuts power when it senses decreased air flow.

IntelliVent’s Expert Approach to Dryer Vent Cleaning

1

Before your dryer vent cleaning, we inspect your dryer vent cover for any damage, disassembling it for closer examination. If there’s damage, we’ll inform you and offer the option to replace the cover.

2

Next, we visually check for any obstructions, like a potential bird’s nest.

3

Our cleaning process involves a specialized system utilizing compressed air, delivering thorough cleaning force through a flexible hose with a small air nozzle.

4

A spinning head inserted into the vent creates an air vortex, gently and effectively scrubbing the vent walls without brushes or stiff rods.

5

During this process, no lint is blown into your laundry room or back into the dryer; instead, all extracted lint is directed away from your space as the jets face backward.

6

Once all the lint is extracted, we conduct a swift cleanup, reassemble the vent cover, and conclude the service.

Many of our customers book their cleaning, go about their day and payment is made via credit card.

Gentle Air Icon

Our Process Is Less Aggressive, Yet More Effective

Customers have told us horror stories of damaged duct work, equipment breaking off in their vents and bent vent covers because of old school, drill powered brush systems being used on their delicate dryer vents. Worry no more.

Our cleaning process utilizes a spinning head inserted into the vent, creating an air vortex, gently and effectively scrubbing the vent walls without brushes or stiff rods.

Lint is not blown into your laundry room or back into the dryer; instead, all extracted lint is directed away from your space as the jets face backward.

Ceramic Coat Icon

Your One-Year Cleaning Guarantee With Ceramic Coating

The last 30% of the duct work is where most of the lint really builds up because of the loss of air speed. We treat the last 10’ with a ceramic coating and buff it to create a surface that resists dust, moisture, mold and makes future cleanings easier.

Our standard cleaning comes with an industry exclusive 6 month “clog free guarantee”. Our ceramic coating after 6 months extends the guarantee out to a full year. Staying on a twice yearly visit means that your vents will be guaranteed to always remain safe and clog free!

Some people believe dryer vent cleaning is an optional task rather than a mandatory one, but this is far from the truth. Regular maintenance brings many worthwhile advantages:

  • Fire safety: Lint accumulation is a silent adversary; clogged vents contribute to thousands of house fires each year. Why wait for disaster to strike when preventative action can keep you and your property safe?
  • Energy efficiency: Even the smallest blockage can cause your dryer to run longer than necessary, thereby guzzling more power. What might start as a few extra dollars on your energy bill can rapidly snowball into a significant expense over time.
  • Appliance longevity:Dryer units and their components cost a pretty penny, so it’s in your best interest to ensure they operate efficiently for as long as possible. Consistent cleaning helps minimize accumulated wear.
  • Consumer Reports rates LG as the top dryer brand and LG says it’s best to have a yearly cleaning while Maytag recommends at least once every 2 years. FEMA also suggests an annual cleaning.
  • It really depends on several factors like:
    • Do you do less than one load a day, have no pets that shed and no one in the house has long hair? Every two years is likely enough.
    • If you have pets that shed, anyone with long hair in the house or do daily laundry then you likely need a yearly cleaning.
  • Some counties require our apartment community clients to have dryer vent cleaning be done yearly. They do this because the Fire Marshall wants to make sure that no one’s life or belongings are at risk from the danger a clogged dryer vent poses.

It’s possible to clean your vents with store-bought tools. Grab your drill, shop vac, a duct cleaning kit, ladder, helper, duct tape, broom and dustpan. Follow these steps:

  1. Locate The Vents: On the back of your dryer, you will find the ventilation ductwork or hose. Next, locate the exhaust vent, which is typically found on the exterior of your home.
  2. Unplug Your Dryer: Before beginning the cleaning process or adjusting the dryer vents, make sure to unplug your dryer from the wall. For gas dryers, be mindful to shut off the gas valve, cap the gas line and unplug the appliance.
  3. Move Your Dryer: It is strongly recommended to enlist the help of another person to help move the dryer about one foot away from the wall. This will provide ample room for you to clear any debris in the ventilation system.
  4. Detach Clamps Or Tape: After you have moved the appliance together, detach any clamps that secure the ventilation hose from the wall to the back of the dryer. For some configurations, you may need a screwdriver for this step.
  5. Clean The Transition Hose: Using the brush from your dryer cleaning kit or any cleaning brush, gently clean the debris from the back of your dryer. Next, clear the inside of the vent and follow any turns to capture all of the lint and dust. Using a vacuum with a hose may also be an effective method to get hard-to-reach debris inside the vent.
  6. Clean The Exterior Vent: Safely place and climb your ladder. Remove the exterior vent cover. Then, clear the ductwork with your dryer cleaning brush and vacuum hose until it is free of debris. It will likely require 2 or 3 10 foot kits to reach all the way to the dryer. Replace the cover once complete.
  7. Reconnect The Dryer: After you have taken care of the vents, clean up any remaining lint around your appliance and secure the vent pipe from the wall to the back of the dryer. Next, connect the power cord and turn on the gas valve, if applicable.
  8. Run An Empty Dryer Cycle: With another person, gently slide the appliance into place. Then, run a test dryer cycle for roughly 15 minutes to clear any residual debris throughout the vents.

Temper your expectations. This approach usually can’t access deep-seated debris, especially on ducts with a lot of bends. Consider leaving the task to specialists for a safe, thorough, and hassle-free experience.

  • Anyone can call themselves a “technician” and advertise their services online but that means nothing. This industry isn’t licensed. The Chimney Safety Institute of America®’s Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician® credential is the only nationally-recognized credential of its kind.
  • Choosing a CSIA® Certified Exhaust Technician® means entrusting your apartment community, home, and/or family to an individual who has dedicated extensive time to studying for and successfully passing a comprehensive exam. This exam covers a wide range of topics, including the meticulous inspection and maintenance of dryer vents, as well as in-depth knowledge of the codes and standards relevant to these systems.
  • CDET® professionals have completed a demanding two-day workshop, immersing themselves in direct teachings from esteemed experts in the chimney and venting field, culminating in their successful participation and passing of the program.
  • Our team has also passed 3rd party background checks and OSHA 1910 training.

Keep an eye out for these red flags and book a session before you risk damage to your appliance or even your property:

  • Longer drying times
  • A burning smell near the appliance
  • Clothes and unit feel unusually hot after a cycle
  • The lint flap fails to open
  • Error code from your machine
  • Dryer stops working completely or shuts down in the middle of a cycle

We clean most residential vents in between 30 and 60 minutes. Multi-story buildings or properties with 100s vents may require several days. Challenges like severe debris build and the need to replace faulty components can also stretch out the timeline.

Neglecting dryer vent maintenance is akin to playing Russian roulette with your home or community. It paves the way for potential fire hazards, increase utility costs, and a shortened appliance lifespan. You’re essentially inviting disaster and doling out extra dough.

Nothing can replace a professional service, but you can certainly do a few easy things to help minimize lint buildup between servicing:

  • Clean the lint trap after every cycle
  • Occasionally check the exterior vent for blockages
  • Avoid overloading your dryer, as this can lead to more lint generated and faster buildup
  • Use dryer vent brushes to clear out accessible parts
  • Keep your unit’s moisture sensor clean if it has one

If you stumbled on our dryer vent FAQs on the hunt for a reliable company, use these crucial criteria to narrow down your choices:

  • Reputation: Unearth reviews and testimonials to gauge customer satisfaction. Are these folks delighted with the service they received, or do they seem disappointed?
  • Experience: A business that’s managed to stay in business for a while has likely tackled various issues and is adept at handling unforeseen challenges.
  • License and insurance: Always ask the company for their state business  license, insurance, relevant certifications, and other credentials that vouch for their professionalism and expertise.
  • Customer service: Call the company and see how they handle your inquiries. Are they prompt, courteous, and knowledgeable?

Our top-notch cleaning service covers every base:

  • Base cleaning: We conduct a thorough sweep of the whole system to bring you lasting cleanliness.
  • Post-job cleanup: You don’t have to worry about cleaning up after our visit. Our team leaves your premises as pristine as they found it, if not cleaner.
  • Coating: Our technicians apply a layer of ceramic to your vent interiors to minimize friction. This reduces lint accumulation and extends the time between cleanings.
  • Optional upgrades: Do you want to replace your flimsy plastic cover with a sleek, powder-coated metal one? Maybe you need a crush- and flame-resistant transition hose — we can add that, too!

Absolutely. Clogged vents hinder your appliance’s efficiency and lengthen drying cycles. This means your appliances run longer and harder, which significantly boosts energy consumption.

Compare your usage costs before and after a cleaning session to see the difference for yourself. Save money in the long run while enjoying the laundry experience you deserve.

When people try to clean a dryer on their own, they forget the steps like:

  • Unplugging the appliance from the power source
  • Improper use of cleaning tools, which can lead to vent damage
  • Not checking the outdoor vent cover for signs of damage
  • Forgetting to reassemble the vent correctly after cleaning
  • Forcefully yanking or tugging the vent and potentially dislocating or damaging it

Clogged dryer vents essentially choke the whole system. The blockage restricts airflow and traps hot air in the dryer instead of venting it out. This overheating will cause the unit to shut down in the middle of a cycle and take longer to finish.

Read your owner’s manual and look for the average drying times for each setting. If your clothes still feel damp after a full cycle, you might have a dirty vent.

You can also test and time your dryer right after a professional cleanup. Treat this as your baseline for future reference.

The appropriate moment to clean your vent can actually hinge on your dryer usage habits. If you’re a sun-chasing, line-drying enthusiast in the summer months, a fall refresh makes an excellent bet to ensure a lint-free winter. Anyone with a penchant for cozy woolens may want a spring session after the heavy, lint-generating winter loads.

Give us a ring when you can’t find the answers you need in our dryer vent FAQs. One of our professionals will clarify your doubts, guide you through the process, or book an appointment for your convenience.
